THE NORTHERN STAR directed by Eléa Gobbe-Mevellec
Synopsis :
After a dramatic escape from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Polaris, a 17-year-old North Korean refugee, joins a rehabilitation center where she shares her life story with other refugees. Charismatic and talented, Polaris’s moving story draws the attention of those around her — and of the media. She relives memories of her childhood and adolescence in North Korea. As she struggles to adapt to the hyper-modern realities of Seoul, traumatic events from her past resurface to haunt her.
Is she really the young woman she claims to be? In a totalitarian state, she always followed the will of the Party, but in a free society, she must take responsibility for her own choices. Polaris realizes that if she wants to succeed in South Korea, she must first confront herself.
The Northern Star is based on documentary interviews with refugees from North Korea recorded by Czech koreanist Nina Špitálníková in her books "Testimony of Life in the DPRK".
